TGIF #54: Something For My Birthday

tgif

It has been almost 7 years, since I last posted a TGIF [Thanks God, It’s Five-day-blog]. So, today I’m gonna retrieve that. I will just jot down five things that happened on my 49th birthday. Game?

  1. My best friend Chat surprised me with a beautiful birthday cake! Well, she never missed a cake for my birthday each year. Isn’t she awesome? Her sister too surprised me with an equally yummy custard cake. We are all wearing red top! That’s another unexpected surprise. Hahaha!
  2. My daughter Z, made a very beautiful birthday card. Handcrafted with love. I have no idea. How she hide it from me? Really amazing!
  3. My family planned a sumptuous lunch too, with my favorite dishes! We are all burping.
  4. I offered free breakfast to the neighborhood on my birthday and the day after. The feeling is just priceless. It is always nice to help people. Sharing is caring.
  5. My husband finally greet me on my exact birth date. Yeah, that’s new! Hahaha! He always think it’s the 21st of April.

All in all, I really had a blast. I will blog (with pictures) one by one these 5, OK?

Thanks everyone who greeted me on Facebook, Messenger and text messages. I feel so blessed!

TGIF #53: Something About Europe

tgif

pisaveronaDSC_1281

It’s Friday again. It’s been a while i haven’t been blogging on Fridays. So, it’s “Thank God, It’s Five-Day” time!

When i was a little girl, I have a complete set of Walt Disney encyclopedia at home, and i was fascinated by the beautiful photos of places and buildings in different parts of the world. I always wonder if i can see these places for real. Was it possible?
I guess, we all do have our dreams to travel; to go “beyond the fence” and explore.

Fortunately, i was swept away here in Europe way back 1994. Italy, to be exact. Born and lived in the Philippines for around 22 years, obviously almost half of my life is now here in Italy.
But, of course, that didn’t stop me from dreaming. I love conquering new countries, cities and places. Too many bucket list. But, i’m taking it one day at a time.

DSC_0020

I still dream of travelling to USA. But Europe’s great, i need to explore it first. I have been loving Europe for the last 18 years! A lot of my friends tell me, “i want to see Europe. i want to see Italy, i want to go up the Eiffel Tower”..etc. etc. Yet i never ask them “Why?”

That’s the basic question to ask. Why do you want to go to Europe?
I’m not an expert about travelling at all, but i guess i can share some tips or hints based on what i know, what i see, and what i have experienced.

Reason No. 1: Learning History

If you have kids, it’s a plus to visit Europe, exposing them to art, history, old buildings and places. But, even if you don’t have kids, you will find yourself be fascinated by the grandiose monuments, church and buildings’ architectures, as well as European culture. Take Italy for instance. Rome has been the ancient city of civilization. Who didn’t study world history about Romulus and his twin brother Remus? See the Vatican City. Think about how Venice was built. Be curious of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper painting in Milan. Florence, where you can see the most beautiful masterpieces of the greatest artists.
Ibiza in Spain, the most picturesque party island in Europe. The powerful Buckingham Palace in England.
See how tall the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Wonder of Mona Lisa’s smile at Louvre Museum.
The charming old squares of the known cities: Prague, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Bruges, Tallinn, Krakow, Nice or Rome.
There are lot to see and learn for sure.

Reason No. 2: European Cuisine

Despite the fact that there a lot of McDonald’s food chain, European cuisine can never be outweighed by them. Everything they cook is crazy delicious and as much as possible, healthy. pizza, spaghetti, Parmesan cheese, Greek potatoes, prosciutto, lasagna, white Swiss sausages, crepes, waffles, etc. If you lived in Europe, you’d sit around drinking espresso all day too. The coffee is phenomenal. Though i’m not a coffee drinker, i came to the point that i’d already loved cappuccino. A lot of european says, Italy got the best gelato (ice cream). I can attest to that. Not to talk about the red and white wines, fantastic!

IMG_9476

Reason No. 3: Outdoor Fun

Europeans love whiling away the day at outdoor cafés. On the sidewalks of Athens, Marseilles, Milan, and Barcelona you can see caffeterias side by side. Europeans love to walk, wander and just hang around the city.
For Europeans—far more sensitive to subtlety and nuance—those 90 minutes are the most sacred and profound of the week. I’m talking about soccer. Almost everybody loves that game in Europe. I’m not familiar with that ball game when i first set foot in Europe. Now i’m a big fan especially during the World Cup, cheering for Italy.
Reason No. 4: Foreign Language

Almost around the world, the word “Ciao”, “Au Revoir”, “Bon Appetit”, “Bedankt”, etc. are commonly used, mixing with the english or other languages. You will always love the sound of Italian, French & Portuguese. They’re sweet and romantic. German and Russian were a bit difficult to learn and pronounced. Of course, every foreign language is difficult. I speak Italian so personally, i can tell Italian is not that hard to learn. It’s a mix of Latin, English and Spanish. If you have watched the movie, Eat, Pray and Love, you would notice the Italian gestures. Italians wave their hands most of the time when speaking. It’s an expression. You don’t need a word if you know what it means.

Reason No. 5: Fashion

You will always think of Europe when you talk about fashion. Milan, London, Paris, Barcelona, Moscow, etc. All this stunning models on catwalks, were almost from Europe. When you think of famous brands; Armani, Gucci, Prada, Ferragamo, Versace, etc, almost all Italian! Rich Asians, Americans, Australians, come to Europe just to shop around. Celebrities bought villas and houses in every parts of Europe as escape from their busy lives.

DSC_0408

Just a piece of advice, Europe is inundated with stampedes of tourists during warmer months, especially during July-August, so expect the fully-booked hotels, crowded museums and restaurants. If you’re not in a hurry for summer sale, visit Europe by September or early October, the weather is a bit cool. Nicer to roam around with boots and light coats. No sweating around and bagging the stomach with cold water and ice cream.

So, enjoy the trip!

ARRIVEDERCI!

TGIF # 42: Something About My Hub

Thank God It’s Five-Day!
Since it’s my hub’s birthday today, i’m gonna share some pieces of him here.
Sssshhh…don’t tell him I wrote something about him. No harmful facts, promise! =)

1.  He loves Jazz. Everything that have sax, trumphet, guitar or piano on it that sounds jazzy. I’m sort of nahawa na sa kanya. He loves Miles Davis, to the point that he wants to use Miles as his profile photo in facebook.
Komontra ako. “hindi ka naman ‘yun!” =)
2. He’s a great handy man. From electronics, electricity, hydraulics and carpentry, he can handle them well. At least nakakatipid kami when something is broken. When i was locked inside our bathroom due to stuck lock, he’s my real hero. (Will tell that story on another blog).

3. He loves travelling around. He works before on a tanker boat, so he traveled a lot of places back in the Philippines. When the budget permits, we traveled a lot too here in Europe.

4. He’s a generous person. No double thoughts about money. When he can, he helps (a lot!), and not even asking in return. When someone borrowed, hindi marunong maningil. [just like me]

5. He’s a very good father and a husband. No question about that. He always surprise me and the kids. From simple to big things, he always think about his family.  Biglang me dala na McDo hamburgers which kids love, at Kebap sandwich which i like. Biglang me regalo na 24K gold watch, mga tipong ganun. hehehe.
Anyway, there are still many good things about him that I love. Of course, no one is perfect, but why focus on the weak side? More than anything, I love the way he makes me smile. We are almost 15 years together now and I still feel like he’s pursuing me. Kilig!

To you Babes, have a wonderful 39th birthday! I can’t afford a material gift for now, but you know how much we love you.
Happy Birthday Comments Pictures

TGIF #28: Something Yellow

Not only kids love Spongebob! I actually do!

Are you ready kids?
Aye aye captain!
I can’t here you!
AYE AYE CAPTAIN!!!
Ohhhhhhh! who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
Spongebob Squarepants!
Absorbent and yellow and porous is he!
Spongebob Squarepants!
If nautical nonsense be something you wish!
Spongebob Squarepants!
Then drop on a deck and flop like a fish!
Spongebob Squarepants!
Ready?
Spongebob squarepants
Spongebob Squarepants
Spongebob Squarepants
Spongebob…Squarepants
Ahhha, ha, ha!

Here are 5 facts about spongebob:

Spongebob fact #1

Did you know that Spongebob’s original name was Sponge boy? But that name was all ready taken so they went with Spongebob!

Spongebob fact #2

There are 10 seasons of Spongebob total! And there will probably be more!

Spongebob fact #3

Patrick’s rock sometimes has a small living room ,and sometimes it’s just a huge bedroom. And other times it’s a whole house! You never know what it’s going to look like under Patrick’s rock.

Spongebob fact #4

Spongebob was created by Steve Hillenburg, a former marine biologist and science teacher who went to art school to study cartooning. Like spongebob, Hillenburg once worked as a fry cook at a seafood restaurant.

Spongebob fact #5

Did you know that Spongebob lives in a pineapple because pineapples are a common motif in Polynesian crafts. In addition, Hillenburg says he thought Spongebob “would like the smell” of a pineapple home. Smell is a very important sense for sea animals.

TGIF #21: Something Numeric

According to numerology, numbers (no matter how silly we think it is) can affect our lives. Mathematics is present in everything that exists and the numbers stand for certain vibrations, and this underlying energy is what unites all that is. In fact it reflects the natural laws that govern the human course of experience.
But hey, i’m not gonna talk about math or numerology here. I’m scared of computations…=).
i will just tell you about my 5 significant numbers i bumped into, this week.
1) 73
i was buying some school supplies last tuesday, and before me there’s an old woman rummaging through some birthday cards. i was waiting for her to finish first before i ask the store owner, so i can’t help eavesdropping.
i’ll just translate in english for the readers’ sake
(i’m in italy. obviously they’re talking in italian.)
store owner: what are you exactly looking? (asking the old woman)
old woman: i’m looking for a birthday card with an age in it. do you have?
store owner: what age?
old woman: 73
store owner: for whom?
old woman: for my husband.
store owner: sorry we have no age-birthday card like that..just 50-60-70-80–and so on.
old woman: hmmm? i’ll just choose a good one. my husband love to receive cards.
and she picked a simple card with a champagne on it. i can’t help smiling deep inside. in this hi-tech world, a simple card is more than anything else. i love that old woman’s gesture. i would sure hope i could also give my husband a card that says: happy 73rd bday!
2) 40
my son Jaki’s back to school and a lot of materials were asked to bring to school.
1 box of crayons
1 box of small color pencils
1 box of small color pens
1 box of big color pens
4 different kinds of erasable pens
1 protractor (180°)
20 pads of writing paper
12 notebooks (3 different types)
1 pad of drawing paper
1 ream of bond paper
2 glue sticks
1 scotch tape
1 yellow highlight pen
1 pack of paper towels
1 liquid soap
all in all, almost 40euro! whew!
3) 35
i’m only using internet key. every 15th of the month i need to load the wind sim card with 35euro. then i’m covered for a month. unlimited FB!
4) 17
for most of us, friday the 13th is “unlucky”. for the italian, friday the 17th is the unlucky one. i’m not a superstitious person. 13 or 17, as long as it’s friday, it’s always lucky. it means the weekend is here. =)
5) 4
4 of my colleagues at work are celebrating their birthdays this september. every friday each celebrant were assumed to “celebrate”. 4 fridays: 4 pizza-dinner! …very burpy!

TGIF #5: something funny

it was a stressful week for us: bathroom’s still a wreck (the job’s unfinished). another leakage problem; bank issues and all… so, i was actually going to jot down my friday rants today, but i changed my mind. i’d rather be relaxed than to add wrinkles on my forehead. the ranting will have their own time. i want a cheerful weekend. i need some laughs!

here are five funny stuffs about marrriage that i grabbed from net surfing:
1.)
Man: Is there any way for long life?
Dr: Get married.
Man: Will it help?
Dr: No, but the thought of long life will never come.
*********
Why do couples hold hands during their wedding?
It’s a formality just like two boxers shaking hands before the fight begins!
*********
2.)
Wife: Darling today is our anniversary, what should we do?
Husband: Let us stand in silence for 2 minutes.
*********
It’s funny when people discuss Love Marriage vs Arranged.
It’s like asking someone, if suicide is better or being murdered
*********
It is difficult to understand GOD . He makes such beautiful things as women and then he turns them into Wives
*********
3.)
If u r married please ignore this MSG,
For everyone else: Happy Independence Day
*********
Before marriage, a man will lie awake all night thinking about something you say.
After marriage, he’ll fall asleep before you finish.
*********
There’s a way of transferring funds that is even faster than electronic banking. It’s called marriage
*********
Galfriends r like chocolates,
Taste gud anytime.
Lovers r like PIZZAS, Hot n spicy, eaten frequently.
Wife r like Dal RICE, eaten when there`s no choice
*********
4.)
Man receives telegram: Wife dead should be buried or cremated?
Man: Don’t take any chances. Burn the body and bury the ash.
*********
Prospective husband: Do you have a book called ‘Man, The Master of Women’?
Salesgirl: The fiction department is on the other side, sir.
*********
5.)
Q: Why dogs don’t marry?
A: Because they are already leading a dog’s life!
*********
There was this guy who told his woman that he loved her so much that he would go through hell for her. They got married and now he is going thru hell.
*********
Fact of life: One woman brings you into this world crying & the other ensures you continue to do so for the rest of your life !
———-
now i’m stress relieved!

TGIF #3: something garfield

for today’s five, i would like to share one of my fave cartoon characters: GARFIELD

Garfield began in the seventies created by Jim Davis. He was an unknown cartoonist then, publishing strips featuring insects. at that time, most of the strips in the newspapers were all about dogs, so he finally decided to base his new strip about a cat. the protagonist’s name came from Jim’s grandfather: James Davis Garfield. in june 19, 1978, garfield debuted in 41 american newspapers.
here are Five (funny) Garfield’s Laws:

1.)
cats move at a speed proportionate to the amount of food at their destination. they may even exceed the speed of sound.
2.)
cats are independent. cats are loners. they are underfoot only when you’re carrying groceries.
3.)
cats instinctively know the precise moment their owners will awake. then they awaken them ten minutes sooner.
4.)
cats are naturally attracted to only one type of human being: the type who is allergic to cats.
5.)
cats can’t hear commands. cats can’t understand cajoling, but they do sense when you want to take them to the veterinarian.
that’s it!

happy meowwing…

TGIF #2: something italian

when you live (long enough) in a non-speaking english country, chances are, you got to learn their language and culture. one thing i love about italy is their music. from classic to pop, they’re awesome.
here are my five favorite italian pop songs. i’ll do it as a countdown.
5.) DOMANI (tomorrow) – italian artists
50 italian artists have joined in singing this song, “domani 21.04.09”. this is written by Mauro Pagani to raise funds for the reconstruction and restoration of the Conservatory “Alfredo Casella” and home of the Teatro Stabile D’Abruzzo Aquila. one year ago Abruzzo suffered from a terrible earthquake and lost over 300 lives.

4.) PIU BELLA COSA (the most beautiful thing) – eros ramazzotti
this song is a declaration of love of Eros to his wife, Michelle Hunziker. i love the lyrics of this song. refrain says: “nothing’s most beautiful on earth but you, thanks for existing.”

3.) PER TE (for you) – jovanotti
the song is dedicated by lorenzo cherubini aka “jovanotti” to her little daughter teresa. i just simply adore this song. it’s like a lullabye.
2.) LA SOLITUDINE (solitude) – laura pausini
laura pausini won with this song at san remo italian music festival back in 1993. when i first arrived here, the song is so popular. i almost memorized the lyrics. even pops fernandez (pinay singer) sung this song when she had a concert here.
1.) GOCCE DI MEMORIA (drops of memory) – giorgia
drops of memory is a song written by giorgia herself with the music of andrea guerra. this is a movie theme song from the movie, “la finestra di fronte” (the window in front) by ferzan ozpetek. the single is the 2nd most sold in italy in 2003, selling 200,000 copies. with this track, giorgia won the silver ribbon for best song. the song also won, best single, best composition and best arrangement in the italian music awards (sort of grammy).
this is my number one fave, not just because i adore giorgia’s voice (i got her hit cd’s!), but also her songs are so romantic and make you fall in love over and over again.
hope you enjoyed the songs.

Thanks God It’s "FIVE-day!" TGIF #1

this will be the first of the coming series of my five on fridays. i’ll just call it TGIF!
TGIF #1 : something unplanned
sometimes it’s always fun when you do things unplanned or just things happened when you least expect it.
1) it’s holy friday. it’s not a holiday for many here. i guess i was the only one not working today amongst the house members. my brother is going to Sardegna with his boss for the holy week vacation, so he decided to leave me his laptop. the plan is i’ll just get it then be back home right away. i prepared my 2 kids and headed to my brother’s house. kids were both interested at harry (the dog). jaki’s scared of dogs. but, today, he caressed harry.
bravo. one step at a time for diminishing his dog fear.

2) my brother’s boss went out to buy some kebaps for lunch. he is always enthusiastic when there are visitors home (that’s us). unfortunately, the turkey kebap take out is close. the grocery however were open even holy friday. so brother went out for a while to buy sugar & ice cream. i asked him too to shop for zendra’s diapers. kids enjoyed again: pc, playstation & tv.
3) it’s 11 am. the sun is shining. brother and i decided to bring the kids at the park nearby. kids love it! my brother carried his laptop and unfortunately, he can’t catch a wireless connection. kids begged not to leave, so we stayed longer.
minutes passed, his boss’ sister called and said she’s not feeling so well, and told that their vacation was postponed! just like that! 3 hours before their scheduled travel. he felt relieved. going to sardegna would mean boredom. i called up mom. told we’re at my brother’s house, and invited her to pass by. “punta ka dito, pizza daw tayo, di na tuloy sina junjun” (he ordered pizza! junjun isn’t going anywhere. sardegna was postponed), i said. mom replied, “o sige, andito na me pa metro” (ok, i’m almost in the subway).
4) pizza time!
i love the pizza box with the baby printed on it. cute! brother ordered 4 boxes of pizza margherita. jaki had one box! zendra ate all the side crusts. she even tasted the coke.
isn’t she cute with the pizza on her face? =)
i almost ate 3 slices…
while we’re busy at the garden savoring the stracciatella flavored ice cream, my daughter is busy picking up little yellow flowers. she’s smelling them one by one. i guess my brother is thinking of hiring zendra as a gardener. =)
she almost picked half of the flowers around.
careful honey…
5) me, mom and the kids went home around 2pm. zendra slept at the bus. it’s just a 7 minute (more or less) ride from my brother’s house to ours. jaki wanted to stay at mom’s house (just the first building in front of us). zendra and i headed home. she was awaken then. i prepared the bath tub. fresh and tired, she slept quietly without conniptions…
my hub arrived from work at 6pm and brought some oranges. i certainly missed my ironing plans. but it was all worth it.
